as
director's introduction
Washington State was the first cradle for my young imagination. I could only see where forests, rivers, and mountain ranges began; to my mind, they had no end. Folk tales, whether local or otherwise, felt like they took place here. Even Narnia, I was sure, lay somewhere just beyond Orcas Island.

As an adult, my ongoing love of film goes beyond mere enthusiasm. I believe film and television are still the primary shapers of the American imagination, even in this fragmented age. Our imaginations, in turn, inform the boundaries of what we believe is possible. Who we see, what we see them doing, and how they are rewarded affect who we grant significance to in our daily lives.

When made with intention, film not only captivates, it transforms.

The Suit is a deeply personal story, which is what gives the film its texture and intensity. I wrote the story about the struggle to escape the cycle of narcissistic abuse. But, I’ve been delighted to find that my readers connect in varied ways, with the character of  “The Suit” often standing in for a personal experience or trauma.

The Suit also celebrates the quiet strength of kindness and earned wisdom. Ava, a middle-aged Black woman, is not the stereotype typically at the center of a thriller narrative. And yet her experience, presence, and moral center carry the day. These earned traits come from a life of fighting for visibility, recognition, and too often, survival.

Finally, I wrote this story so that it could only be filmed in Washington. It is a tour of Puget Sound, showing off our natural and cultural richness. It will drip forest greens, misty blues, and old-brick reds. The Pacific Northwest is one of America’s most distinctive and yet under-filmed regions. I hope to use its expansive beauty and mystery to push back the boundaries of my audience’s imaginations, just as it did for me.
